Console interjú

Talán a csillagok különös együttállásának köszönhetõen az a szerencsés helyzet állt elõ, hogy egy hazánkban még nem annyira, bár Európában már eléggé ismert zenekar, a Console lemezbemutató túrnéjának utolsó állomásaként Budapestre is ellátogatott. Tette mindezt az aktuális „Reset The Preset” címû duplaalbum megjelenése után két nappal, a Petõfi Csarnok Depeche Mode klubjában, január 24.-én. Aki jelen volt, egy igazán jó hangulatú és minden szempontból jövõbe mutató pop produkciót láthatott. Leginkább az tûnt fel, hogy az elektronika és a hagyományos hangszerek, valamint a háttérvetítés ritkán harmónizálnak ennyire, mint ezen a koncerten. Martin Gretschmann-nal a zenekar vezetõjével, még a fellépés elõtt, egy hangulatos budai kávézóban beszélgettem.

Mana Mana: Most fejeztétek be az európai túrnét. Hogy érzitek magatokat? Elégedettek vagytok?

Console: Sok koncertünk volt és mindegyik igazán jól sikerûlt. A zenekarban mindenki elégedett. Örülünk, hogy újra túrnén vagyunk. Már három éve nem csináltunk ilyesmit csak évente egy-egy bulit.

MM: Vicces dolgokat produkál az élet. Csináltál egy Depeche Mode remixet és most felléphetsz Budapesten a Depeche Mode klubban. Látsz változást a megitélésedben a Depeche Mode remix és a Björk számok megjelenése óta?

C: Nem, nem igazán. Talán néhány ember megismerte a nevemet, aki elõtte nem, de nincs semmi különös változás.

MM: Mondanál valamit a zenekarodról. Miben különbözik egy élõ Console fellépés, a lemezeken hallható anyagoktól?

C: A különbség aközött amit példáúl ma este fogunk játszani és ami a lemezeinken van, az hogy a koncertek sokkal energikusabbak, több gitárral, valószínûleg a számok így sokkal táncolhatóbbak. Ez a legnagyobb különbség, amitõl persze még ugyanazok maradnak a dalok, csak néha kicsit máshogyan, vagy legalábbis más hangzással játsszuk.

MM: Éppen most jelent meg az új lemezetek, ami nekem egy elég komplex alkotásnak tûnik. Az elsõ lemezen pop slágerek csokrát találjuk, míg a másodikon a kattogós elektronika kap fõszerepet. A Te ötleted volt összekapcsolni a két különbözõ stílust?

C: Nem egészen, amikor elkezdtem a felvételeket, elõször csak egy kluborientált lemezt akartam csinálni, tánczenét néhány pop dallal. Az elsõ hét elteltével, csinálni akartam néhány ambient számot, csak úgy pihenésképpen. Hazajöttem egy buliból kora reggel, elõttem állt egy szombat délután és még zenélni akartam, de valami eltérõt, sokkal nyugisabbat szerettem volna. Pár hét elteltével kialakúlt a munkafolyamat, hétköznap dolgoztam a pop számokon, a hétvégén pedig az ambient zenéken. Újabb pár hét múlva már úgy gondoltam, nem fogom ötvözni a különbözo típusú dalokat egy lemezen.

MM: A koncerten fogtok játszani a második lemezrõl is valamit?

C: Ma este nem. Ma az elsõ lemez lesz terítéken, csupán azért mert ezek sokkal dinamikusabb dalok. Néha, olyan helyeken ahol ülnek az emberek a koncert alatt, speciális ambient mûsort adunk. Ilyenkor az egész fellépés nagyon nyugis, ilyet csináltunk példáúl a párizsi Pompidou Központban is, de ezek különleges estek, nem ez a jellemzõ.

MM: Szóval, a koncertlemezetek egy ilyen nyugis, ambient elõadást tartalmaz.

C: Igen. Tudtuk, hogy valami különlegeset kellene játszanunk ott, az emberek ûltek és, ha egy ilyen helyen elkezdesz pörgõs zenét játszani, az elég unalmas, mert nem fognak felállni és táncolni. A Központ felvette a fellépést és késõbb, amikor visszahallgattuk elég kellemesnek találtuk. Odaadtam pár barátomnak kazettán, akik meggyõztek, hogy elég jó anyag, így végül kiadtuk.

MM: A „Suck And Run” kislemezén hallható egy szép, spanyol verziója a számnak. Ez a kedvencem a maxiról. Honnan származik ennek az ötlete?

C: Amikor elkezdtem dolgozni az albumon pár hónapig Barcelónában éltem. Ott találkoztam egy Velcro névre hallgató zenekarral, akik nagyon jó fejek. Megkértem az énekesüket, hogy egy-két számomban énekeljen, ennyi.

MM: Milyen hangszereket használtok a stúdióban és koncerteken?

C: A koncertekre van egy dobosunk, aki elektronikus és részben akusztikus dobfelszerelést is használ. Van egy basszusgitár és egy gitár, egy vocoder amit az énekesnõnk használ, valamint két szinti, egy Korg MS 10-es analóg és egy billentyû, amit a számítógéphez használok. A stúdióban megintcsak a számítógépem és a Korg analóg kap fõszerepet, de van pár gitárpedál is, amiket leginkább az ütemek és a visszacsatolások gyártásához használok. Van pár szintim, példáúl egy Waldorf Microwave, vagy egy régi Obernheim Matrix 6-os. Körülbelül 10 éve kezdtem gyûjteni oket, de még nincs túl sok. De használok mindenféle zajkeltõ eszközt, példáúl faxgépeket is.

MM: Mi újság a másik zenekaroddal, a Notwist-tel?

C: A következõ hónapokban egy barátunk filmjéhez fogunk zenéket készíteni. Ez egy dokumentumfilm, egy emberrõl aki átúszta a csatornát Franciaország és Anglia között. Ambient és minimálzenéket csinálunk a filmhez, nyáron pedig elkezdünk dolgozni az új Notwist albumon is.

MM: Dolgozol mostanában remixeken is?

C: Jövõ héten készítek egyet a The Eternals számára, ami a francia Benjamin Diamond cégénél a Diamond Trax-nél jelenik majd meg.

Console interview

There was a very lucky situation, wich we may thanks to the stars or planets wich stands together, that not the best known band in Hungary despite of Europe, was here - as the last stop - in Budapest to hype there new double album. They did it in the PECSA's Depeche Mode fan club after their new release called "Reset The Preset" came out on the 24th of January. The crowd there in the elation know, that they saw a very progressive and future-calling pop venue. The best thing was, that the electronica and the acoutstic instruments harmonized brilliantly together and of course with the visuals. I spoke with the band's leader Martin Gretschmann in a fine coffee bar before the concert.

Mana Mana: You were on a European tour now. How you feel yourself?

Console: Generally it was so far. We played on many concerts and every concert was really good. So, everybody in the band is very happy. And actually we are all very happy to be on tour again we have into any tours for 3 years now. Just a single show a year, or there, but not a real tour.

MM: The life is very funny. You maked a Depeche Mode remix and now you can play here in the Depeche Mode club. You see some changes in your judgement since the Depeche Mode rmx and the Björk tracks?

C: No, not that many changes actually. Probably know my name some people who didn’t know Console till the Björk record, or the Depeche Mode remix, but it’s didn’t really change.

MM: Can you say something from your band? How different the live performance of Console like your records?

C: I think the difference between what we do for example tonight and what is on the record is that concerts are more rock’n’roll, more guitars and more for dancing probably. This is the main difference, but the songs are still like the same songs, we just sometimes played a bit different, or with different sounds at least. And also sometimes they has some extra parts.

MM: Your new album released at the moment. It seems to me a complex work. The first half is a little bunch of pop hits and the second is the glitchy electronica stuff. Your idea was linking these different things?

C: No, not from the beginning, when I started to recording this album first I intended to do one record, which is very club orientated, for dancing with some pop songs. But after like the first week when I started recording, or doing the first songs I needed to do some more ambient oriented stuff, just to relax myself, to come myself down. Also because I went the weekend, so went out for myself for dancing and when I came back early morning and I got a Saturday afternoon and I still wanna to gone keep on workin’, but I just needed to do something different, something more relaxing. So after some weeks I was working on the weekdays on the souns of the first side and on the weekends I was working on the ambient songs. And after few weeks I had two different kinds of songs and I thinking to myself okay, I don’t want to combine this songs on one CD.

MM: You will play on the concert from the second part too?

C: No, not tonight. Tonight we will play the songs of the first album, just because it’s supposed to be more dynamic. Sometimes we play it certain places, where the people are seated and than we do special ambient shows, where the whole set is very quiet, very ambient, like we did it in Centre Pompidou in Paris. But it’s only special events.

MM: So, your live CD contains an ambient set?

C: Yeah! It’s the set we played there, because we knew that we need something special plays, and everybody sitting, and so than if you play rock’n’roll set it’s kind of like boring, because the people can’t get up and dancing so we will thinking about playing some ambient songs. They (the Centre) recorded this and after we founded the recording was really quiet well. I gave it to some friends on tape, and they are saying „Okay, you have to put it out”. So, we finally put it out.

MM: On the „Suck And Run” single have a nice spanish version. It’s my favourit from the single. Where the idea came from?

C: It was just, because when I started working on the album I was living in Barcelona for a couple of months and happend to meet this band called Velcro whos based in Barcelona, they are very nice people, so the singer of this band I was just asking him to sing on 1 or 2 of my songs and he did it.

MM: Which type of instruments do you use in the studio and on the concert?

C: For the concerts we have a drummer, who plays partly electronic and partly acoustic drum set. We have bass guitar and guitar and a vocoder for the singer, because she sings from songs from the vocoder and some 2 other keyboards, a Korg analogue synthetizator MS-10 and I plays from my computer. For recording I have also mainly the computer and again this Korg synth, some old foot pedals for guitars what I usually use for making beats, and feedbacks. I have some synthetizators on the studio, like Waldorf Microwave for example, or an old Obernheim Matrix 6. I started to collect them synths like 10 years, but it’s not to many. But I used fax machines or else.

MM: What about with your other band, the Notwist?

C: We will do a bit of a soundtrack on the next months for a friend of us who does a documentary about the people who cross the chanell like swimming between France and Britain. We make some ambient, minimal music for that film and on summer we plan start working on a new album.

MM: Do you works on remixes actually?

C: I will do a remix next week for The Eternals. It will be released on the label of Benjamin Diamond on the Diamond Trax.
